Arvind Kejariwal Gets Bail By Supreme Court Court

On Friday, the Supreme Court gave bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who had been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with an alleged liquor policy scandal. The court criticized Kejriwal's long detention without a trial, saying it was an unfair denial of his freedom.

The two judges, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, agreed on releasing Kejriwal but disagreed on another issue. They debated the CBI’s decision to arrest him in June while he was already in custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), especially since he had been granted bail by a trial court just days earlier.

Justice Bhuyan questioned the CBI’s timing, suggesting that the CBI only acted after the trial court granted bail in the ED case. He found it odd that the CBI waited so long to arrest Kejriwal and was critical of the agency’s actions.

Kejriwal had first been arrested by the ED in March after missing multiple summons, which he had called illegal. The CBI had questioned him in April last year but did not arrest him until June this year. Kejriwal’s team argued that the CBI's move seemed like a political tactic to keep him in jail.

Justice Bhuyan criticized the CBI for not providing enough evidence to justify Kejriwal’s detention and said it was wrong to keep someone in jail without clear proof of their guilt. He also stressed that the accused should not be forced to make statements that could imply their guilt.
